Mir Ali Shir Nava'i, Divan. Kashmir (?), 18th century (?), Chagatay

Old number 139. A collection of Nava'i's poetry beginning with a preface on f. 8b-14a with headlines and beautifully illuminated unwans. The end on f. 174a includes the year 886/1481-1482 which agrees with the approximate date of the composition of the divan (cf. Alisir Nava'i, Divan. Izdanie teksta, predislovie i ukazateli L. V. Dmitrievej, Moscow 1964, p. 5). Cf. Karin Ådahl, "A copy of the Divan of Mir 'Ali Shir Nava'i of the Late Eighteenth Century in the Lund University Library and the Kashmiri School of Miniature Painting", in Persian Painting from the Mongols to the Qajars, Studies in Honour of Basil W. Robinson, ed. Robert Hillenbrand, London 2000, pp. 3-18. According to Ådahl (p. 10) there is no doubt that the miniatures belong to the Kashmiri school. Ådahl also assumes, from stylistic analyses, that they were painted before 1800, and that the whole manuscript was produced in Kashmir. Contents;

The composition as well as the dominating red and orange colours are typical of Kashmiri lacquerwork. History

Origin

No date, except on f. 174a the year 886/1481-1482 which must refer to the year of the completion of the divan; the manuscript as a whole probably belongs to the 18th century. According to Jarring, the ms. no doubt originates from Russian Turkestan, maybe Samarkand or Bukhara, although the note in Chinese on f. 461b might indicate some connection with Eastern Turkestan.

Provenance

On f. 461b a note in Chinese, according to Karin Ådahl (op.cit. p. 17), the meaning of the note is not clear, but may be interpreted to give the number of pages and illustrations. There is no indication of when or where the note was written. On f. 178a an illegible seal impression. The ms. was brought to Sweden from Russia by a Swedish businessman around 1920 (letter from C. E. Fritzes Kungl. Hovbokhandel to Gunnar Jarring April 9, 1937).

Acquisition

The ms. was bought in 1937 by the Lund University Library from C. E. Fritzes Kungl. Hovbokhandel in Stockholm. Price paid according to a note on f. 461a 850 Swedish kronor.
